What is “3g” Mobile?

“3g”  briefly explained

3g stands for 3rd generation of wireless communication technology.
that is Data and Voice communication via wireless (mobile technology) in it 3rd generation.
As the name suggests, there follows two earlier generations.
 

“1G”
Known as the brickIn the early 1980′s 1g was the method used by cellular networks
to transmit analog voice calls.
The basic mobile phone network.
 
The second generation arrived in the 90′s when mobile companies deployed the digital voice
network  known as the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM)
Features would be  Phone calls – Voice mail – Receive simple email messages
at an average speed 10kb/sec that would be 30-40mins to download a mp3.
 

 


“2.5G”old nokia phone
Some say there was a 2.5G which was somewhere in between, this was just technology advancing and improving the network and would include phone call/faxes – voicemail – send & receive larger emails – web browsing - navigation at speeds 64- 144 kb/sec that would take 6-9mins to download a mp3.

  

“3G”
the modern day iphone
Was formed in 1998 and is the one available today. 
Features – Phone calls/fax – Global roaming – Send/receive large email messages
- High-speed Web – Navigation/maps – Videoconferencing- TV streaming
- Electronic agenda meeting reminder. Speeds are 144kb/sec – 2mb/sec thats 11sec – 1.5mins to download a mp3. 

You may see or hear the term HSDPA  (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) which is technology that can supply speeds up to 14mb/sec.
The future  ”4G”  is just around the corner and may offer speeds up to 100mb/sec.

usb dongleToday’s 3G is not just for mobile phone, we use 3G for connecting computers, laptops,
hand held devices, using USB modems (dongle) or wifi modems enabling non wired
connection to the Internet.
