ADSL / Broadband Faults
If you have a problem with your broadband connection you have to find out if the fault is outside or inside your property, and if the fault is your or your service providers responsibility to fix.
Below we have provided a few basic tips on how you can determine this and hopefully identify where the problem is and a possible cause.
We hope the information below will help in some way.
Broadband Connection faults
Connection faults come in many forms, from slow speeds, interference and intermittent drop outs to no service at all. If you have problems with your connection then try the following:-
No Connection
First thing to always try with broadband connection problems is simply turn off your router wait 30 seconds and turn back on, this resets the router and many a fault has been cleared by doing this. If no difference try these:-
- Check / change the connection leads from your socket to the router
- Change the micro filter if one fitted
- If wireless connected, connect via wire
- If possible connect your router to the NTE test socket see self checks if still no connection then
- Contact your service provider and report a fault if connected to the test socket, leave it plugged in and inform your service provider that you have plugged the router directly in to the test socket on your NTE and still have no ADSL connection.
Slow connection speeds
Most service providers do tell you the maximum speed you should get for your area, might be 1mb 2mb 3mb 3.5mb 8mb and so on.
If you think that your connection speed is slow, then do a quick speed test to see what speed you are actually getting.
If you are a lot slower (more than .1.5mb) than promised this may be due to many factors but try connecting to the NTE test socket to see if your wiring is slowing you down or not. if not then contact your service provider as we will not be able to help you.
If there is a difference in speed by connecting to the test socket, then there are problems with your wiring and or connected equipment .
Wiring
Wiring is the most common cause of ADSL problems Have you any:-
- Old wiring
- Wiring that runs under carpets/laminate flooring
- Wiring through door frames/jams
- Old unused extensions
- Extensions that run outside with internal cable
- Old screw down connection blocks
- Electrical interference
Incorrectly wired telephone circuit
Your wiring must be wired correctly for ADSL to work efficiently.
You will probably not know if your wiring is wrong or right but all these can effect your service
- Star wiring (extensions that are incorrectly spurred off main feed)
- 2 directional wiring (extension wiring and adsl wiring that travel in opposite directions down the same cable)
- The Bell wire .... bell wires are the 3rd wire in some circuits, these can cause interference and act as an antenna disrupting your ADSL connection
General Faults
Types of faults that you may have on your telephone internal and external wiring and equipment are:-
- Loop faults .... These are the most common fault, usually old wiring or damp
- Earth contact .... Same as above but also caused by connected equipment (old sky boxes are favorite)
- Connected equipment ... causing disruption to your ADSL, these include fax machines, answer machines, call cords, phone systems, gaming machines
The list above is only a few possible reasons that your ADSL is not at its best, but all common to one thing,
your telephone line wiring and connected equipment.
Your telephone line would not be perfect with some of the above faults on it, but would work and probably has been working without you even knowing there was a fault.
It is only when you come to report a fault to your service provider, that these faults come to light and the unpopular charges that follow.
